7. Midnight Angels: Aneka and Ayo

A group of females called the Dora Milaje train for years becoming the personal bodyguards of the Black Panther. Two of them were the Ayo and Aneka. Aneka was taken prisoner after she killed a man who was physically abusing women. Ayo spoke on Aneka’s behalf saying what Aneka did was the right thing to do. Aneka was still convicted and sentenced to death. Ayo was not going to take this laying down. She stole two prototype armors for the Midnight Angels and rescued her beloved.

I felt uneasy putting them as villains to Black Panther. Ayo and Aneka are freedom fighters and their cause was just. They were fighting to put an end to the abuse women were being put through in the nation of Wakanda. But they were the antagonists in A Nation Under Our Feet. Ayo and Aneka were at war against T’Challa and the throne of Wakanda. What really put them in the villain category was when they almost gave into violence and barbarism. The good thing about this story is their voices were heard when the war ended. And they didn’t give in to unnecessary violence or lose their souls while fighting a war. In the beginning, they may have started as villains, but they ended as heroes.
