6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

At the time, 2014 had marked the third Spidey film I have watched of the web-head in the cinema. I had very high expectations for the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man since the 2012 reboot.

Unfortunately, this did not live up to the hype and quite a lot of fans expectations. The second outing of the Marc Webb helmed film almost felt at times like a prolonged and oversaturated music video. While the drama between Peter Parker/Spider–Man (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) were complimentary, the story had suffered the most from over-complicated sub-plots, force-feeding quips and too much world building of potential sequels and spin-offs.

In this chapter, although the pacing was a lot quicker and provided a lot of set-up, the development of the characters, particularly, the antagonists were not fleshed out. Its strengths were the performances. Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) was the most egotistical and darkest portrayal of the character, which had room to explore further, but the addition of ‘The Green Goblin’ could have been saved for another film. Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx) was another villain that had an immense and menacing act while his civilian identity could have been given a lot more weight.

This was a crushing end to a series left open within the realm of possibilities but no closure and has been served as an example of franchises that shuts the door completely to a shared–universe of films without a proper test of audience feedback.
