5. Spider-Man 3

The final part of the Sam Raimi trilogy, Spider-Man 3, came at a time where remakes, reboots and sequels, especially three–parters were not as prevalent then as it currently is now.

Coming from the success of the last film, Raimi I am sure intended for this to be the last as years later after its release he admitted not being as invested with this film as the last two.

Spider-Man 3 opens with Parker (Tobey Maguire) finally maintaining the balance as a photographer for the Daily Bugle and his relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) while being a likable superhero to New York.

However, things are not always so mellow as Harry Osborn (James Franco), who has obtained the mantle of his father and become The New Goblin are not on speaking terms. Plus Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) is at competitive odds with him at the Bugle. Not to mention, wanted convict Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church) is revealed to have ties with the murder of Uncle Ben years back.

Already, there is a lot going on and that was the main problem with this film. Unlike Webb’s second entry into the Spider-Man franchise, where the writing team managed to make the screenplay tighter and it’s multiple antagonists in synch with the story arc, these film’s antagonists were not. Venom was shoehorned into the last act of the storyline and Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard) was another romantic interest for Parker and Brock to woo at. It lacked focus in terms of the message it was trying to convey.

Despite this, it brought closure to the Goblin legacy, Flint – the Sandman – brought a new angle for Spidey on how to deal with criminals and taught him forgiveness. The action sequences, visual effects and performances from Franco and Church were among the highlights.
