5. Black Canary

One of the DC Universe’s most skilled combatants, Black Canary is renowned for her cat-like agility and lethal sonic scream. She made her DC Comics debut in 1947 and has been featured in countless storylines since. Initially a mainstay of the Golden Age, the character’s origins were rewritten following Crisis On Infinite Earths. This introduced us all to the Dinah Laurel Lance that we know and love today. Her most iconic partnership has definitely been with the Green Arrow, but she’s also a member of the Justice League and the Birds of Prey.

While the character has never appeared on the big screen, she has been a regular presence on the small screen. Black Canary had a substantial role in Birds Of Prey, Smallville and Young Justice. But her most famous TV appearance yet comes from The CW’s Arrow, in which she is portrayed by Katie Cassidy. Unlike the comics, this version of Laurel isn’t a metahuman. She starts out as a Starling City lawyer, before evolving into the Black Canary. Additionally, the show has featured alternate versions of the Canary, portrayed by Caity Lotz and Juliana Harkavy. And it also features her more comic-accurate Earth-2 doppelganger, Black Siren (also portrayed by Cassidy).

As she is one of DC Comics’ strongest female characters, a solo Black Canary movie is well overdue. With a potential Gotham City Sirens film and a Justice League sequel on the horizon, it’s about time that this “pretty bird” makes her debut on the big screen. However, she should follow in Wonder Woman’s footsteps and do so in her very own film.
