3. Catwoman

One of DC Comics’ most intriguing characters, the whip-cracking Selina Kyle would be more than worthy of a solo movie. Debuting in 1940, Catwoman has an abundance of legendary comic book arcs which would serve as great inspiration for a big screen adventure.

Unlike the majority of other DC characters on this list, she has actually appeared on the big screen four times. Lee Meriwether portrayed the character in 1966’s Batman: The Movie, Michelle Pfeiffer brought her to life in 1992’s classic Batman Returns and Anne Hathaway donned the mask in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. But what’s even more shocking is that Catwoman actually already headlined her own solo movie in the past (well, sort of).

Long before Warner Bros. were commissioning standalone origin stories, they released Catwoman in 2004. This may have been a DC movie, but it definitely was not the same character from the comics. The film was originally intended to be a Batman Returns spinoff which focused solely on Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. But Pfeiffer was eventually replaced by Halle Berry and Catwoman was replaced by, well, a different Catwoman. It’s not as bad as everyone likes to think it is, but it was a wasted opportunity that undermined the legendary comic book character.

Thus, in this era of standalone films and origin stories, it would be the perfect time to bring Selina Kyle back to the big screen — and give Catwoman the solo movie she deserves. And now that we have a Wonder Woman sequel to look forward to (and a Black Widow movie on the way from Marvel), it’s time to give Catwoman the same platform. She has always been a symbol of female empowerment, and could easily lead her own film.

Arguably the most recognizable female comic book character, Catwoman deserves the honor of starring in her own solo movie.
