Though the events and ramifications of the Skywalker-driven narrative may be monumental, the current period is merely blip on the radar in a galactic war between the Jedi and Sith that goes back thousands of years. A setting that was explored with great success in the Knights of the Old Republic video game, placing a stand-alone movie during the heyday of the great Force wars would allow for original storytelling that wouldn’t be cramped by the now innumerable restrictions of the “modern” Star Wars saga–something that has been a thorn in the side of recent movies.
This age offers readily made heroes and malicious villains fighting for ultra-high stakes without the need to fit the plot and details into the narrow canonical needs of any of the previous trilogies. Few facts are set in this era, though it does offer a bevy of enticing story possibilities–making it unique in the Star Wars timeline.

It brags enough familiarity to generate excitement, but enough obscurity to offer freedom, conditions that could lead to a film that was both highly anticipated but, ultimately, a completely fresh endeavor.
