4. Commissioner James Gordon

Some of you are reading this and thinking, “How is this any different from Gotham?” Well, there is one major problem with Gotham. It isn’t really about James Gordon. Gotham is more about the young villains. Just from the commercials alone, I’ve seen Joker, Firefly, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, and a very young Catwoman. Gordon (played by Ben McKenzie) may be one of the stars, Gordon’s life started before any of the major villains come into play.

The comic book Batman: Year One, is an example of what a James Gordon story should look like. The series had a lot of Batman, but the story followed Gordon’s time adjusting to becoming a cop in a corrupt system. His partner had him beaten down, Gordon cheated on his wife, and there is also his time meeting Batman. Batman: Year One may not be his exact beginning with him being in the Marines, but it’s a good start.

I wrote an article about how the Dark Knight trilogy didn’t need Batman to be a success. One of the main reasons is that James Gordon is such a great standalone character. Everyone loves a good mystery and a great detective. James Gordon can provide both of these.
