Which Marvel movies are planned for 2021 and 2022?
Feb. 18, 2022: Captain Marvel 2
Captain Marvel will not hit theaters until March 2019, but as Marvel’s first female-led film, it’s inevitable that Carol Danvers returns for a sequel, whether it’s in two or three years, or whenever Brie Larson’s schedule opens.
Feb. 18, 2022 will mark just under three years since Captain Marvel’s release. It’s a projectable timetable for a sequel, given how Marvel usually sets up its movies and sequels.
What will happen in a potential sequel? Your guess is as good as ours. There’s still the first movie and an appearance in Avengers 4 to sift through (maybe a surprise debut in Avengers: Infinity War), so Carol’s character arc remains to be seen. The fallout from that will create her direction for a sequel, however the MCU looks by May 2019.
If it’s not Feb. 18, 2022, it would not be a surprise if Marvel pushes the sequel up to 2021. Box office success and a clamor for more (a positive studio impression helps, too) can go a long way, especially if Phase Four is not set.
Either way, expect Captain Marvel to get a sequel and open a path for female superheroes in the MCU. It took 11 years, but the payoff should be seen in 12 months.
