4. Jay Garrick returns

Barry Allen and Team Flash may have had their hands full with DeVoe all season, but their biggest test had nothing to do with The Thinker. Midway through the season, Central City faced the threat of a nuclear bomb. And while the heroes made it there on time, Barry was just a millisecond too slow to stop the eco-terrorist from detonating the bomb. What followed was an incredibly enticing episode set in “Flashtime”, which saw Barry and Jesse Quick slow down time to try and avert disaster.

However, not even the combined effort of two speedsters could solve this problem. So Barry decided that it was best to recruit Earth-3’s Flash, Jay Garrick. While Jesse retrieved him, Barry turned to Harry for help. He brought him into “Flashtime” for a conversation just as Jay arrived. The veteran speedster was shocked by Barry’s new abilities and warned him that throwing the bomb into the Speed Force could destroy it.

Hearing Jay’s triumphant theme in such a harrowing moment brought a sense of hope to the dire situation. Whatever was happening, it was okay because Jay was there to help. And his knowledge on the Speed Force, along with his warning to Barry, really added to what was already a tense scene.

After being absent all season, it was so worthwhile to see Jay Garrick back on the show. And, like always, John Wesley Shipp delivered a great performance. A perfect scene for the legend’s comeback.
