2. The Flash is back!

After Barry Allen sacrificed himself to the Speed Force, Central City was left without protection from the Scarlet Speedster. As a result, the season 4 premiere saw Team Flash desperately try to retrieve their leader in order to stop the Samuroid. And while they did just that, it was clear that something was very wrong with him.

Unable to utter a coherent sentence, Barry Allen was broken — overwhelmed by his time in the Speed Force. But when Iris offered herself up to the Samuroid, the fire (or lightning) returned to his eyes. In a heartbeat, Barry burst out of confinement, taking the new Flash suit with him. And just like that, The Flash had returned.

Defeating the Samuroid in seconds, he retrieved Iris with a smile on his face. And we knew that we were in for one heck of a season. Moreover, seeing the Scarlet Speedster race down Central City to save his lady was an epic sight, and a truly fulfilling conclusion to the episode. In addition, it was also great to see such a light-hearted and fun return from Barry — especially because season 3 was bogged down with depression and darkness.

This hopeful moment set the tone for what would become a very light-hearted season. Make no mistake about it, the moment wasn’t just letting us know that The Flash was back in Central City. It was metaphorically informing us that, after losing its way, The Flash was back to doing what it does best — making us smile.
