Avengers 4 will be the last time Chris Evans suits up as Captain America.

Avengers 4 will not arrive for another 13 months, let alone Avengers: Infinity War, which hits theaters in over one month. The fate of multiple superheroes, if not all of them, will be on the line. It’s due to the arrival of Thanos, the ultimate big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his desire to acquire the Infinity Stones.

Throughout the MCU, Chris Evans’ Captain America stood at the forefront as one of the top heroes. The same will happen in Infinity War, especially given the latest trailer’s final scene that signaled the battle between the Star-Spangled hero and the Mad Titan.

However, this will be one of Evans’ final appearances in the MCU, with Avengers 4 as his last. He confirmed this to The New York Times. That means just two more movies of Cap, before the mantle either stops with him or moves to someone else.

Given the magnitude and symbolism of the Captain America character, along with its comic book history, there’s enough reason to think it sticks in the MCU. Can anyone live up to the hype, though?

4. Bucky Barnes

Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes will be the favorite to take the Captain America mantle, pending it continues after Avengers 4. That’s not just due to Barnes as arguably the most famous non-Steve Rogers version of Cap.

Stan told Cinema Blend he signed a nine-picture contract. It’s an insane number of films for anyone to agree to, but Marvel Studios ensured its current Winter Soldier sticks around. Discluding a cameo in Black Panther, he has or will appear in five films: Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. It’s seven years into the deal (eight by the untitled sequel), but four films still remain.

It’s must be a nine-picture deal for a reason, right? Bigger plans might have been set from the moment Stan signed, or to remain as the Winter Soldier for the entire contract. Secrecy is done well at Marvel Studios, so it’s likely no one finds out until the end of Avengers 4, if Barnes becomes Captain America.

As Captain America, Barnes led the New Avengers in the comic books, a group that included the MCU’s underused Clint Barton. Could the same happen in Phase Four?

Barnes is the favorite to move up, but there are other options.
