Alex’s Choice

The elder Danvers sister had her own exploration into her identity last season when she realized that she was gay. This continued throughout Season 3 as she contemplated married life with Maggie. Though many were disappointed that Maggie left the show, it allowed Alex to make a big decision about her future.

As the season progressed, it became more and more obvious that Alex wanted to have children. While it could be argued that Maggie not wanting children was slightly forced with Floriana Lima’s exit, it allowed Alex to grow. In particular, the relationship Alex built up with Ruby showed that she was ready to be a parent.

Yes, Alex was upset after the break-up of her engagement and it took a visit to Eliza Danvers to get her over it, but she’s always been a strong character. Her relationship with Kara remains one of the cornerstones of the series; Alex is the person that Kara turns to when she needs advice and who snaps her out of her own slump.

Winn and his mother

Moving on to Winn, a character who won’t be around as often in Season 4. This season, he reconnected with his estranged mother while also dealing with the death of his father. We met his father, Toyman, during Season 1’s excellent episode “Childish Things,” but his mother remained elusive.

When we met Mary Schott, it soon became obvious why. Winn held a grudge against his mother for abandoning him when his father went to prison. However, it turned out that it wasn’t as simple as that. Mary had, in fact, left her husband after many years of abuse. This all came to a head during an emotional confrontation at the DEO. Winn believed that Mary promised to take them to Disneyland, but in fact, she was fleeing to a shelter.

Unfortunately, Winn’s youth blinded him to the truth and he became estranged from his mother. When she returned, Winn had a strained relationship with her, but once she explained, the two reconnected and even shared a karaoke song.
