Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey to film in 2019. What else should we expect from the first all-female comic book film from the DCEU
The last time we saw Margot Robbie in a DCEU film was in 2016 box office hit Suicide Squad. While critics and fans stood divided but one commonality was Robbie’s standout performance as Harley Quinn. The studio also took notice and reports quickly surfaced that Robbie would appear in multiple DCEU films.
The first is Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey in which Robbie served as executive producer. After three years of working on Birds of Prey, Robbie’s film has been fast-tracked by Hamada. According to Discussing Film Twitter account, filming for Birds of Prey will start as soon as January 2019.
With filming set to start within a few months, there will be no shortage of news. In the meantime, here’s what we expect from Robbie and Yan’s Birds of Prey.
A small-budget R-rated film
For some time it’s been speculated that the DCEU would produce some R rated films. After all, when Walter Hamada jumped ship from New Line Cinema it was to be expected. Some of his greatest productions were R rated. Despite them being in the horror genre, critics and fans agreed on the greatness that was The Conjuring, Annabelle Creations, and IT. Additionally, Robbie expressed her interest in developing an R-rated Harley Quinn film to Collider back in May.
"“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, Harley needs friends.”"
Flickering Myth confirmed that Birds of Prey will, in fact, be rated R. That’s right, Birds of Prey will likely feature a ton of f-bombs and lots of kick-ass violence. Additionally, the site also revealed that Birds of Prey will be on a smaller budget than other DCEU films.
"“Birds of Prey is described as “different” from the other DC titles featuring Harley Quinn. Not only will it be R rated but it’ll be made with a “much smaller budget.”"
Robbie’s commitment and the support from the new President of the DCEU, Walter Hamada could only spell success. The information about Birds of Prey is reminiscent of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. Like BoP, Deadpool was a low-budget film, a superhero flick that was years in the making. It ultimately cultivated in a critical and blockbuster success and Birds of Prey can do the same.
