Supergirl season 3: Ranking its five best moments
4. Alura is alive
Without a doubt, one of the most impactful moments of the season was the miraculous return of Kara’s mother. Alura (previously portrayed by Laura Benanti) had always played a major role in the show, despite the fact that she had been presumed dead. Appearing through flashbacks, dream sequences and holograms, she was always a presence in Kara’s life and it was clear that the Girl of Steel spent her whole life on Earth missing her mother.
But as Kara and Mon-El found themselves in the remnants of Argo City, Alura made her way towards them. From the moment she heard the familiar voice, Kara’s face dropped and she was stunned as her mother appeared behind the caretakers. From both womens’ expressions to the background music that had become synonymous with the show’s emotional moments, we couldn’t help but tear up as we realized that Alura was never dead.
While the pair weren’t given enough screentime in subsequent scenes for their reuniting to fully flourish, this single moment was everything it should have been. Moreover, it was great to see Smallville legend Erica Durance have such a significant role in the second half of the season. And although parts of it felt rushed, it was nice to know that this character we had become attached to over the years (through memories alone) was alive, after all. Kara finally has her mother back.
