Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #22 introduces us to an angel instead of someone on the dark side. Spoilers ahead for this issue.

Last we saw, Ben and Kaine were heading to the same location. When this issue starts, Kaine finds himself in a trip place and has a two-headed dog coming after him. We spend a bit of time with Kaine while he goes up against the dog and has a run in with Nakano.

The main thing that this issue does, though, is introduce Gabriel to both Kaine and Ben. While things don’t go so well for Kaine, Ben gets the cure for Abigail. That’s the crucial information we get in this issue and everything else did feel like a bit of filler.

However, art from Will Sliney is great to look at during Kaine’s bit of action and he does facial expressions so well. This makes Ben’s bit of the story even more entertaining. Is it the best issue? No, it isn’t, but that’s fine. Not every series can have a home run with every issue. But it’s not quite filler either.

Now that Ben has the cure, it’ll be interesting to see how he gets that back to Abigail considering he runs into trouble every time he turns a corner. It’ll be a big tasks just for him to do that and it should make for an entertaining story.

Peter David has made this series fun to read. He has a feel for the character that makes you relate to him, even if he was a super villain for a time. It helps make him more likable now that he’s trying so hard to do the right thing.
