Riverdale will be debuting its second full-scale musical episode in season three. Which show will they choose to adapt? Here are our top four picks.

Riverdale will be putting on another musical during its upcoming third season, according to ComicBook.com. The news broke during Riverdale‘s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) panel last month, though further details remain under wraps.

Without knowing much about this season’s plot or when the episode will air, it’s difficult to speculate about which musicals would work best. Last season’s Carrie: The Musical-inspired “A Night to Remember” ended up tying in surprisingly naturally with the show’s plot. Presumably, the producers and writers will want a similar level of connection between Riverdale‘s plot and that of the chosen musical this time around.

I don’t have much to go on, but I’m going to speculate anyway because why not? Here are four musicals I would love to see Riverdale take on in season three.

4. Grease

As a disclaimer, I’m purposefully not suggesting cliché musicals like Les Mis, Rent and Wicked, as much as I love them. While I don’t like the equally cliché Grease nearly as much, I feel obligated to include it in this list because it’s a quintessential high school musical… that is set in the 1950s.

More from Opinion

Riverdale hasn’t paid much homage to its mid-twentieth century roots so far, the notable exception being Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) dream sequence back in season one. Riverdale High putting on a production of Grease could be a very natural way in do so in season three.

That being said, with Grease‘s 1950s setting, comes its problematic, dated ways of thinking about women and relationships. I have faith that Riverdale could navigate that well, though — exposing its issues and offering a modern take. After all, the musical will likely only be partially staged in the episode, so some of the songs could be reinterpreted to an extent as they were in the Carrie episode.

Grease was most recently adapted for television in Fox’s 2016 live production.
