Review: Spider-Man/Deadpool (2016) #37, Spider-Dad
Spider-Man and Deadpool begin a brand new arc in the series! But will it be good? Read our review for Spider-Man/Deadpool #37 below!
All the way back in 2016, the first issue for Spider-Man/Deadpool was published. The series started with a bang with a complicated (but fun) relationship between the two titular heroes. And now, two years and 37 issues after, it’s a pleasure to say that dynamic is still intact! As a result, the series is still great, even when starting a new arc.
The new direction
Spider-Man/Deadpool #37 follows the events of issue #36, where both the Wall-Crawler and The Merch With a Mouth try to turn Master Matrix into a good guy (and, you know, stop him from destroying the future in the process). This appears to be the central idea in the new arc Robbie Thompson (the writer) will tackle in the next few issues. Fortunately, it looks like it will pay off. Needless to say, it’s really fun to watch Spider-Man and Deadpool trying to act like dads. They have really different ideas on how to take care of Master Matrix, so it adds a certain complexity to their relationship.
And speaking of Master Matrix, I’m glad he’s been getting some character-development lately. Because when he first appeared, he was that generic bad-guy that wanted to take over the world because… I don’t know. It was fun for him, maybe? But in the new issues, he’s treated like a proper character and this new arc takes him to some new and interesting places.

Overall, the new direction for the characters in this issue is a lot of fun! Let’s just hope it stays that way as the next issue seems like it will change things a lot more. But aside from that, everything else in this comic is great.
The art and action sequences
Jim Towe, Sean Parsons, Cam Smith and Brian Reber all do flawless work with the illustrations this time around. This is really the best Spider-Man/Deadpool has looked in many, many issues. Every panel is simply great, and the action is really good too. Perhaps it is not as mind-blowing as other issues, but (again) it looks fantastic.
The humor
I usually don’t write a whole section about the humor with this comics, but this issue is so great in this area that I just had to. Whether Deadpool is breaking the fourth wall or being proud about something not-so-nice Master Matrix has done, every joke is hilarious. Usually everything related to Spider-Man and Deadpool is pretty funny, but this issue really stands out more than others with the humor that’s presented here.
This issue was incredibly good. Let’s hope that the series manages to stay that way (especially with the new setting issue #38 will have).
