Review: Edge of Spider-Geddon (2018) #1 recruits Spider-Punk

Edge of Spider-Geddon is here and the first issue focuses on Hobie Brown’s Spider-Punk. We have a spoiler-filled review for you.

Spider-Punk is one of the Spider-Men who is pretty easily recognizable. You won’t find another Spider-Man who looks like him and in this issue, we see what his current situation is like. This includes him getting a visit from Kang the Conglomerator.

Earth-138 is a place filled with Anarchy and it has the same sort of tones that we would see in Spider-Gwen on Earth-65. You have this darker tone to everything, but it’s emphasized by some glimpses of brighter colors, thanks to the coloring work by Brian Reber. Gerardo Sandoval’s art fits well with the story and that makes this more interesting to look at.

The Hulk has a brighter green mohawk here, so you know things are fairly rebellious. Jed MacKay does a nice job with giving us a story that quickly gives us everything we need to know about Earth-138 and what life has been like for Hobie before Spider-Woman comes to recruit him by the end of the issue.

Right now, it’s unclear how this fits into the bigger picture of things other than the final moment where Spider-Woman comes to get Hobie. However, it is a nice introduction to the character for those who might not know much about him. Plus, we get a look at Captain Anarchy and Robert Bruce Banner, who seem to be two of Hobie’s main friends on Earth-138.

Edge of Spider-Geddon #1 is a fine start, but we’ll need the next three issues to fully grasp the picture before Spider-Geddon #0 launches. After that, it looks like Superior Octopus #1 will be next in the reading order. I hope that as this mini-series continues, we’ll learn more about what Spider-Woman eludes to without too much delay.
