5. Captain America: The First Avenger

DVD Sales $49,239,173/2.3 million units
Blu-ray Sales $68,376,353/1.9 million units
Total Sales $117,615,526/4.2 million units

The second to last installment in Phase 1 is Captain America: The First Avenger. It certainly succeeds over Thor. Cap sells over 1.4 million units in his debut week and brings more than $32 million in total revenue. Carrying on the trend before is the market purchasing the film more on Blu-ray rather than DVD. Still, it is hardly at any sizable difference.

One drawback Captain America has going for him is his release time. Again, he lasts at number one for only a week. This is due to the problem of many new releases the following week. Digging into this, one of these is Disney’s Cars 2, the sequel to the smash hit of theirs. Benefiting Captain America over Thor is his release window being closer to the holiday shopping season. Captain America: The First Avenger hit shelves in late October, compared to Thor’s mid-September release.

Thanks to this scheduling, Captain America outsold Thor by twice as much during the month of December. By the end of 2011, Captain America: The First Avenger was the ninth best selling Blu-ray of the year.
