Review: Web of Venom: Ve’Nam #1 takes us back in time
Web of Venom: Ve’Nam #1 takes us back to 1966 to dive deeper into the history of the symbiote. Here’s our spoiler-filled review of the issue.
Donny Cates is diving deep on Venom and the symbiote’s history. We don’t see Venom per se in this issue, but we see his ancestors basically. We saw a glimpse of them in the main title already, so this just adds to the story and we get to learn more about Rex Strickland.
The ancient symbiote is known as the Grendel and it existed well before Venom came around. Even Wolverine wasn’t sure what to make of the symbiote when Nick Fury sent him out to hunt a team of them down. Rex was the only one who safely detached from the symbiote and he was tasked with hunting it down afterwards.
The art from Juanan Ramírez and colors from Felipe Sobreiro perfectly capture how things were during the war. You won’t find a ton of bright colors in this issue, nor should you. War is gritty and harsh and this art reflects that. You have explosions (which is where the colors do get a bit brighter), death and the jungle. All of that is reflected extremely well. This truly is a beautiful issue.

I’m loving how much Cates is putting into the history of not only Venom, but the symbiotes that came before. It adds a deeper element to the story that we’ve never seen before. However, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the Grendel and I can’t wait to see what else Cates and company have in store for the upcoming stories.
