4. Supergirl

Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, was first introduced in the comics in 1959. She allowed writers to expand on the history of Krypton and open up a whole new line of stories for Superman. Outside of her own comic series, she can now be seen on the popular television show Supergirl portrayed by actress Melissa Benoist.

There was a previous attempt at a live-action film starring Kara. Supergirl was released in 1984 as a spin-off of the Superman franchise starring Christopher Reeve. The movie starred Helen Slater in the title role and performed poorly both critically and at the box office. In August 2018 it was announced that new Supergirl film was in development. Warner Bros. is seeking a female director to work from a script by Oren Uziel.

A Supergirl movie could do a lot for the DCEU. It can add a new female-led feature to the universe to add to its growing diversity. Exploring her background can give filmmakers a chance to return to the Krypton created by Zack Snyder in Man of Steel and feature popular characters like General Zod or Faora. Supergirl could also act as a bridge to a Man of Steel sequel. The character is popular enough not to require a Superman appearance but it certainly wouldn’t hurt. Supergirl’s arrival on Earth would also provide an opportunity to introduce the villain Brainiac to the DCEU.

There is also the issue of Henry Cavill’s contract. The longer it takes for Warner and Cavill to work out a deal, the more risk of losing any momentum with the character. Supergirl can keep things moving while Cavill’s future is determined one way or the other.
