Look up in the sky it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s … a new actor replacing Henry Cavill as Superman.
A wave of disappointment rushed over the landscape of the DCEU when rumors swirled around Henry Cavill’s departure. In 2013 Zack Snyder and the old regime of DC Extended Universe introduced Cavill in the first of their shared universe films, Man of Steel. Cavill’s portrayal as a serious, more brooding Superman was met with mixed feelings. Some fans supported Snyder’s vision of the hero while it appeared that the studio wanted the character to lighten up.
From the begging, controversy surrounded the DCEU, but no matter what, Cavill was great in his performances he was our Superman. For years, fans have patiently waited on a Man of Steel 2, a true sequel to the 2013 blockbuster, but it never happened. And, it never will, at least not with Henry Cavill. Unfortunately, Warner Bros and Cavill couldn’t reach an agreement, so he hung up his cape.
As with any business, the machine keeps going. While he’s not just another cog in the machine, the studio, specifically Walter Hamada has to look for a replacement. For many fans, Cavill will always be Superman but there are a number of fantastic actors who can step up to the plate. There is a fantastic foundation already established thanks to Man of Steel. Conversely, Justice League altered that version of Superman, just a bit. So, we don’t know which Superman we’ll get going forward. According to Deadline, Warner Bro’s has a guy in mind, Michael B. Jordan. Since there hasn’t been an official casting we have eight actors who would kill it as the new Man of Steel — just in case.
8. Clive Standen
Fans of History channel period drama Vikings know Clive Standen as Rollo. In the series he played the older brother of Ragna Lothbrok. Rollo was exactly whatever Viking was, intimidating and savage, but he had a soft spot. Comparably, his character’s intimidating yet charming personality ideally fits the Man of Steel version of Clark Kent. Standen his the “look” and perfect height (6’2) to make for a convincing Superman. His short stint in the canceled series Taken as Bryan Mills also lends itself well to Synder. The same goes for his role as Knox in Patient Zero.
Standen is a bit of an unknown and a TV actor similar to Zachary Levy’s Shazam. Maybe the Walter Hamada looks to take Superman to a smaller budget film, and Standen allows him to do that.
7. Liam Hemsworth
The Hemsworth name is a famous one, partly thanks to Liam’s big brother’s portrayal of Thor in the MCU. Of course, the 6’3 little brother had a hand in making the Hemsworth name popular as well. Liam Hemsworth got his claim to fame in the Hunger Games franchise as Gale Hawthorne. He also starred in Expendables 2 as the young mercenary, Billy the Kid. He also shared the same screen as the talented Kate Winslet Judy Davis, and Hugo Weaving in the Dreammaker.
no reason to believe that Hemsworth can’t play a convincing Superman. And he’ll fit perfectly as a Man of Steel style Clark Kent. There’s also another fun bonus with casting him as Superman. It would make for an interesting conversation at dinner. The question on everyone’s mind would be… Who will win in a fight, Thor or Superman? These two could just duke it out and give us the answer once and for all.
