Review: Venom (2018) #6, there’s a big price to pay

facebooktwitterreddit

Donny Cates continues to write an impressive story in Venom #6 that takes us deeper into the history of the symbiotes.

Last issue, Rex, Eddie and Venom became one. In this issue, even though they are one, Rex can still operate on his own a little. We see it when he connects himself to the Hive to draw out Knull. There are so many things that Eddie can do now with both Venom and Rex combining their powers, but we only really scrape the surface of that.

While it would have been nice to see the three together for a bit longer, Rex serves a purpose and he make the ultimate sacrifice in the end. His symbiote pretty much became Rex. He had human emotions and understood what it meant to be a soldier, which makes his sacrifice harder for Eddie to swallow.

The story that Donny Cates has crafted with this series so far is beyond impressive. Other than Lethal Protector, I haven’t read a ton of Venom stories. Usually it’s just appearances in other titles, but this run from Cates and Stegman has me deeply interested in the history of this character now. It’s new territory, but they’re making it come to life so well.

The way that Ryan Stegman draw the symbiote is fantastic too. Whether it’s just Venom or the combination of Rex and Venom, it just looks amazing. He’s done a great job with Knull and the various creatures we see, too. Top it off with JP Mayer and Frank Martin’s work and the book is just so well done.

Venom is a title that I’m constantly looking forward to. I already can’t wait for the next issue and I hope that others are enjoying this series as much as I am. If you haven’t checked it out just yet, go grab the first issue and see how you like it.
