Season Four
The writers really tried to make season four better than its predecessor. The show brought in Ralph Dibny, who often served as comedic relief. Team Flash also tackled villains of the week for a good chunk of the season. Season four took some positive steps, but it can still be considered the worst season of The Flash.
While Clifford DeVoe began as a refreshing change of pace, the character’s intrigue faded pretty quickly. Sure, he was smarter than Barry; after all, DeVoe is the Thinker. But, therein lies the problem.
DeVoe literally outsmarted Barry at every turn, so Team Flash lost practically every battle with the Thinker as the season wore on. While the same can be said of the other main villains, the conflict with DeVoe took Barry’s constant failures a step too far. It’s hard to root for someone who, with each passing week, continues to look entirely incapable.
The “twists” in the relationship between DeVoe and his wife, Marlize, were predictable. As a result, season four’s mystery was the weakest of the four seasons.
The finale was fairly disappointing and the reveal of the mystery girl’s identity didn’t have the shock factor it was meant to. The first two seasons had great cliffhangers, while season three ended with one that worked, too.
Meanwhile, season four ended on a flat note. All around, season four was a let down, though it was still enjoyable, because it still featured the characters we love. There are plenty of ways the show can get back on track, and hopefully it manages to do so.
