8. New Mutants (August 2, 2019)
While not as famous as their older mutant brethren, Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod’s New Mutants do have a strong following among X-Men fans. Thus the idea that there’d be a New Mutants spin-off from the X-Men movies was something they’ve been looking forward to for a long time. And when it was announced that the New Mutants film would also be a horror film, well that certainly sounded intriguing. It even boasted a pretty decent cast of young actors, including Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Magik, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball.
Unfortunately, the first trailer dropped. Basically, if you took out the words “Marvel” and “New Mutants” from it, what you basically get is a sneak-peak at a run-of-the-mill “teen scream” flick, complete with jump scares, human test subjects, evil doctors, and a creepy version of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.” In other words, it looked generic and cheap.
Now this movie was supposed to have already come out in theaters last April, only Fox changed the date to February 22, 2019. Supposedly, this was so it wouldn’t compete with Deadpool 2, but the real reason was that Fox wanted reshoots to make it “scarier” after its initial screen test. Then when the release date for Dark Phoenix was changed for Valentine’s Day, the release for New Mutants changed yet again for August 2, 2019.
By the time New Mutants does hit theaters, it will have been almost two years since the first trailer. Whatever momentum this film has now been utterly lost, and the unless the second trailer proves outstanding, I’m not sure even if even the most dedicated of fans will rush to see this.
