Review: Typhoid Fever: Spider-Man #1 focuses on Mary

Typhoid Fever: Spider-Man #1 gives us a look at Spider-Man trying to stop Typhoid Mary, but not having as much luck as he would hope.

After seeing Alice Eve portray Typhoid Mary in season 2 of Iron Fist, it’s a bit odd to see her with Spider-Man in this issue. Prior to Iron Fist, I wasn’t too familiar with the character. In Typhoid Fever: Spider-Man #1, Mary is the owner of more than just two personalities.

Clay McLeod Chapman brings us a story about Mary being kept in a facility where she’s killed people and a man named Doctor Charles has tries to wall off her various personalities. Between Bloody Mary and Typhoid Mary, she’s done a lot of damage. Mary also brings up the fact that men have been trying to tell her story for years. It’s ironic considering this issue is written by a man.

Mary is an interesting character and Stefano Landini does a nice job with the art to show us the different sides of her. Mix that with colors from Rachelle Rosenberg and you get these nice looking dream-like scenes contrasted with some horrible moments.

While Spider-Man was a secondary character in this, he fell victim to Mary’s ways and had his own bout of amnesia. I do wish he would have been a little more alert because we didn’t get to see him be quite as quippy as usual. However, with the focus being on Mary, it isn’t surprising that Spidey was tossed around a bit.

This issue largely sets the tone for the few issues that will tackle Typhoid Mary’s story. The next issue will be Typhoid Fever: X-Men #1 and more than likely won’t feature Spidey in any way. Overall, I thought the issue was fine. It didn’t feel super critical to what we’ve been seeing from the other Spider-Man titles lately, but it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out for Mary.
