What was good and bad about Sony’s Venom?
Venom made its movie theater debut and it exceeded the expectations of the masses. The roll out may not have helped the movie’s cause, but once people went to see the movie it’s received better reviews from the audience than we all would have thought.
According to Variety, Venom ranked in $80 million which is an October record (a record held by Gravity which brought in $55 million). Venom also received a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 32 percent, while the audience rating was 89 percent. The critics may not have liked it, but the fans are enjoying it. With such mixed reviews. what were the good and the bad of Venom?
The Good: The Symbiote and Eddie
In the comics, the symbiote suit is known for being one with Eddie Brock. They both had a common hatred for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Without Spider-Man in the movie, what would the two bond over? Towards the end of the movie, Venom says that on his planet he is a loser like Eddie. That common bond made sense and even helped with the final fight scene.
For a comparison, Eddie and Venom’s situation is like a buddy cop comedy. At first they didn’t like or respect each other. However, once they found a common ground, it worked.
Just like every buddy comedy they argued and then worked it out in the end. Venom would talk to Eddie in his head and Eddie would freak out. Eddie would call Venom a parasite and Venom would get upset. The two of them together was a perfect match-up. While I’m sure fans would have wanted Spider-Man to be in this movie, it seems like he wasn’t needed.
