With rumors swirling around that Rocksteady may be working on a Justice League video game, we take a look at the things that could make it an unforgettable experience.
When Batman: Arkham Asylum released, it took the gaming world by storm. On one hand, it revolutionized combat mechanics to the point that many people felt you couldn’t get any better than fighting as the Cape Crusader in Rocksteady’s trilogy. Even nine years later, games like Marvel’s Spider-Man still use it as an inspiration when designing the main character’s movement and fighting style. On the other hand, it was the very first game that let you feel like you were really Batman, and that was one hell of an accomplishment. But with Arkham Knight being the last installment in the series, many are looking forward to what’s next for the British gaming company. And with rumors of a Justice League video game in development, it’s time we take a look at the things that could help Rocksteady revolutionize the gaming world one more time.
Different game mechanics for each hero
You can’t make a Justice League game with just one hero as the main character, and you also can’t make them all play the same. Like we said earlier, part of the reason the Arkham games were so successful is that they really made you feel like Batman. Whether it was simultaneously taking down multiple criminals, using various gadgets to solve puzzles or thinking like a true detective in tough situations, gamers really felt like the Dark Knight. Rocksteady nailed it when designing the character fans all around the world love. So now, imagine a game that not only would let you feel like one true superhero but several of them.
Of course, there are games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance or Justice League Heroes that try to deliver on that promise, but those games are more than 10 years old. Lately, we’ve been seeing very few superhero games. And when they do release, they tend to have just one main character. That’s because developers want to focus on creating the ultimate experience for one hero instead of a mediocre take on multiple ones. But considering Arkham Knight‘s release was more than three years ago, Rocksteady has had enough time to create iconic and respectful playability for each member of the Justice League.

While you could argue Kratos’ mechanics in the latest God of War could make for a great Thor game or that Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn could play a bit like Hawkeye, there’s nothing quite like controlling Green Lantern or Wonder Woman, yet. Even Sam Fisher’s playability in Splinter Cell: Black List could be applied in a Black Widow game, but the same cannot be said for many DC characters. It would be something new and innovative not only for Rocksteady, but for players all around the world.
A variety of cities as your playground
Imagine being able to explore not only the darkest alleys of Gotham but also the bright streets of Metropolis. You could go to iconic places like the Fortress of Solitude or even take the fight underwater in the breathtaking city of Atlantis. The possibilities are endless for all of the locations you could visit in a Justice League video game. Each city could have unique threats and even different gameplay mechanics. Gotham’s criminals could be low-profile thugs, while Keystone City’s threats could be a little more metahuman. And, flying in Metropolis’ skyline would feel different from swimming in the great seas of Atlantis.
Of course, this could all be a little far-fetched, considering the immense amount of work necessary to create each playable area. But, it’s at least possible, as the game is rumored to hit next-gen consoles. The power to bring many different maps to life could, in theory, be there once the game releases. Besides, it wouldn’t be necessary to make each city too expansive. Just take a look at God of War for an example of a game where many worlds are brought to life at the same time. Maybe Rocksteady can even reuse Arkham Knight’s map so that they could focus on creating new areas for the player to explore in the Justice League video game.
