7. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
More than half way through our list now and we’re getting close to the top 5 best Lee cameos. Up next, and narrowly missing out on a top 5 spot, is Lee’s cameo in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).
A little background needs to be given about Lee and his association with Captain America needs to happen before we discuss the cameo. While a lot of people are under the impression that Lee created Captain America, this is actually not the case. Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.
Lee was involved in the writing process of many of the Captain America comics and is credited for the idea of using the shield as a weapon, but Lee did not create the character.
Which makes his cameo appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger just that little bit more amazing. Lee cameos as a general, sitting in the audience waiting to honor Captain America. He ends ups mistaking Cap for someone else and makes reference to this by saying: “I thought he’d be taller.”
It’s a nudge to all those who are aware that Lee did not create Captain America. Obviously, a creator would never mistake their own work in such a simple way, at least that’s how I view this cameo anyway.
Another fun fact as well before we move on, this was the first film Lee appeared in for a character he did not create.
