16. Scarlet Witch

Stan Lee’s Scarlet Witch is one of the greatest villains-turned-heroes. Originally part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (because that’s not the most obvious title for a group of bad guys ever), it seems that wasn’t something she or her brother, Quicksilver, ever really wanted to be.

When they save Magneto from the Stranger, they consider that they’ve paid their debt to him and join with the Avengers. This is a similar storyline that followed in Age of Ultron, where the two joined with Ultron after blaming Stark for the deaths of their parents only to see that the Avengers are the path to follow.

It’s easy to think that the characters were eventually turned to good because of the fan reaction to them. That certainly wasn’t the case. Stan Lee always intended for them to become good, wanting to show that not all villains are inherently or wholly bad.

Up to this point, many comics had focused on the black-and-white approach. There were the good guys and the bad guys. Lee brought a turning point to the world of comics and superheroes to show that villains could become good. And, of course, that means it could work the other way around.

While Quicksilver is an interesting character, it’s Scarlet Witch that takes the spot out of the two of them. She’s the one that has the most power, being able to kill off almost all mutants in the world. She’s the one that has set off various events throughout the comics, but not always with evil intentions. She helps teach “the wrong things done for the right reasons are still the wrong things.”
