Review: Venom No. 8 unleashes the symbiote again

Venom No. 8 continues with “The Abyss” as we learn more about Flash Thompson’s ties to the symbiote.

Eddie Brock already met the Maker in a previous issue of Venom and now the Maker is ready to move on. He lets Eddie visit Flash Thompson’s grave through some fancy tech of his, but it isn’t quite the same as actually being there. However, Eddie manages to get away once the Maker manages to anger Venom just enough to come out again.

Venom has been one of my must-read comics since it’s first issue and I can’t say that about too many others right now. The way Donny Cates is spinning this story keeps it constantly interesting. This issue introduces Cletus Kasady into the mix and leaves us hanging.

Iban Coello and Andres Mossa make this book look fantastic, too. Having a strong creative team all around is always helpful. It makes the comic one to look forward to each month. The art is beautiful and brutal all at once. The look of Venom is great and I’m glad to see that continuing even after the initial artist change.

This issue also lets us know that Eddie knew some bit of Flash was still connected to the symbiote. Venom would think about Flash more than Eddie. Eddie could sense this because of the connection that’s formed between the host and the symbiote. We’re getting an even deeper understanding of that connection in these stories and it’s exciting to explore.

With Kasady on the table now, too, things are building up to an even bigger story. There’s an epic coming next summer and I’m already looking forward to it. However, I’m sure the issues we get before then will be just as satisfactory as these first eight have been.
