There are few shows that manage to seduce us with their writing in the way that Legion does. On the surface, it’s a superhero show about mutants (that is linked to the X-Men movie franchise), but underneath all that, it’s an intellectual enigma that manages to subvert our expectations with ease – intricately plotting out the narrative with such extreme detail that plotholes are impossible to find.
Following on from its acclaimed first season, Season 2 reintroduces us to protagonist, David Haller – who makes his long-awaited return after spending the whole year in an orb (yes, it’s as bizarre as it sounds). He soon realizes that his allies have joined forces with the antagonistic Division 3 in an attempt to stop the real villain, Amahl Farouk – the Shadow King. With that, we are immediately thrown into another enthralling adventure that, as expected, takes a lot of jarring twists.
The writers are once again able to rely on Haller’s questionable perception to highlight his unreliability as a narrator and thus, we often end up forming thoughts and feelings about something, only to discover later that things didn’t exactly work out as he explained them – that is a testament to the rich character that they have created and to Dan Stevens’ award-worthy performance.
Despite having slightly more episodes than Season 1, the pacing with this show is never off. It may not reach the incredible highs of its predecessor, but it comes very close as the writers delivered another engaging, edge-of-seat thriller that kept us guessing the whole way throughout.
