Much like its fellow Netflix/Marvel shows, Jessica Jones also returned for its second season earlier this year. Debuting on the streaming platform back in March, Season 2 marked its comeback after a near-three year absence and followed the character’s appearance in spin-off show The Defenders.

Following the demise of her archenemy Kilgrave, the troubled protagonist takes on a new case which, of course, brings with it a horde of new issues. But now that she has her own reputation as a gifted (in more ways than one) vigilante, she is even more formidable than she was last season. However, she wouldn’t be such a rich character without her own issues and throughout the season, she is forced to confront her own past, due to the return of her own mother. This undoubtedly made for another compelling story that was easy to get completely invested in – even if it fell slightly short of our expectations.

This one is an unfortunate case of just having too much to live up to. Jessica Jones‘ second season is far from bad – it is, without a doubt, incredibly competent and highly enjoyable. However, as the first season was nothing short of a noir masterpiece, this failed to reach the highs (and dramatic lows) of its predecessor. It, like its fellow Netflix shows, also suffered from the seemingly recurring issue of producing too many episodes and thus, things are unnecessarily prolonged for the sake of it and, as a result, the pacing drags at times.

Overall, Jessica Jones Season 2 proved to be another gripping adventure that will undoubtedly keep you hooked right to the very end, and Krysten Ritter is nothing short of radiant on screen, but it never quite matches the near-perfect level of Season 1.
