G. Willow Wilson continues to steer what may be Marvel’s most consistently good ongoing series in the past 4-5 years. The ongoing saga of Kamala Khan, as well as her eclectic cast in Jersey City, perfectly captures the ideals of both the company and the beloved superhero universe as co-created by the late, great Stan Lee. Nico Leon quickly established himself as the series’ new regular artist, drawing most of the issues released in 2018.

And, 2018 was quite a year for Khan. It began with her taking yet another sabbatical from her role as Ms. Marvel, following a continued blow to her spirit from various events. This time, her friends Zoe, Nakia, Gabriel, Mike, and the Red Dagger tried to fill her slack. Khan reconciled with her mentor Captain Marvel and helped defeat her oldest enemy, the Inventor. She also was pushed to her limit by the Shocker and came to terms with her first crush and best friend, Bruno.

As the year, and Wilson’s run itself, comes to a close, Ms. Marvel is exploring the notion of legacy. The origins and specifics of Kamala’s powers are being detailed, and her place in the past, present, and future is being established. 2019 will see Wilson leave the series, and a new creative team take over this March. The series has been one of Marvel’s best sellers in trade and digital, and it will remain to be seen if that audience sticks it out. Regardless, Ms. Marvel has continued to act as a bastion to the fact that the fundamentals of superhero comics still work in the modern day.
