Although not the main villains of Captain Marvel, it looks like Hydra has slithered its way into yet another Marvel movie. Fans of the franchise should keep their eyes peeled for glimpses of these classic MCU baddies
Speaking to SlashFilm on the set of Captain Marvel, executive producer Jonathan Schwartz teased a little bit on how classic MCU villains, Hydra, might fit into Captain Marvel.
Schwartz had this to say about the appearance of the multi-headed snake:
"“I wouldn’t go into this movie expecting a Hydra plot. I think with the Skrulls get to be their own thing. But if you remember your Marvel history they’re definitely there.”"
For Marvel, universe and history is always key. And Captain Marvel, which is set in the 1990s, back before any of the other movies took place, offers the perfect opportunity to add a little color to the universe. In other movies, viewers get glimpses of everyday things, such as, who is president, what the UN looks like, and how a Marvel lens might change the landscape of New York, and here again, is a chance for Marvel to define their version of the world more closely.
But this shading might involve some darker knowledge brought to light.
Reviewing known Marvel history reveals that Hydra is very much alive and already deeply infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D by the 1990s. In fact, one of the most game-changing events in the entire franchise occurred in 1991, when the Winter Soldier, puppeteered by Hydra, murdered Howard and Maria Stark.

This event would undoubtedly have had long-lasting repercussions on S.H.I.E.L.D, which Howard helped found and figures largely into the movie, repercussions the organization could still be dealing with when Captain Marvel begins. Not to mention, since Coulson and Fury are both big players in the film, any of their colleagues could be Hydra in disguise. Perhaps characters that were never revealed to be Hydra could be unmasked.
It might be too much to hope for a Winter Soldier cameo, but that’s not entirely out of the question either, given the timeline.
One way or another, it will be fascinating to see how exactly Hydra creeps into the picture.
Although Hydra likely won’t be playing a major role in the movie, their presence will allow the MCU to do what the MCU does best: pull its worlds together, much to the delight of audiences.
