Star Wars: Age Of The Republic: Jango Fett (2019) No. 1 review
By Monita Mohan
Jango Fett is on the hunt for a runaway with a crew of other bounty hunters, and he’s brought his son, Boba, along for training. Nothing could possibly go wrong in Star Wars: Age Of The Republic – Jango Fett (2019) No. 1, right?

Jango Fett is renowned as the most fearsome bounty hunter in the galaxy. When a crew of hunters are recruited by a desperate, and rich, client, they think they’ve got the job in the bag. Four professionals to grab one runaway? This is easy money, or so they think in Star Wars: Age Of The Republic – Jango Fett (2019) No. 1.
And then the fabled bounty hunter turns up, but he’s not alone. Jango has brought his son, Boba, with him for ‘training’. The rest of the crew are perplexed, but what do they care. The gig turns out to be just as simple as they had expected, but then people got greedy, and deal turned sour. This incident in Star Wars: Age Of The Republic – Jango Fett (2019) No. 1, is going to ensure that the Fett’s ruthless legacy lives on in the galaxy far, far away.
I am not ashamed to admit that bloodthirsty baby Boba Fett is definitely a favorite when it comes to prequel trilogy characterizations. Daniel Logan played the character with such enthusiasm in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, he quickly cemented his place in the character’s history. Jody Houser beautifully recreates some of that on-screen fervor in this issue, along with capturing Temuera Morrison’s calm demeanor.
Of all the Age Of The Republic comics so far, this installment is the first one that attempts to represent the features of the actors who originally portrayed the main characters. Luke Ross does an exceptional job which enhances the book’s reading experience. The art makes it feel like Star Wars, and what more can a fan ask for than that?
This series has been such a joy to read, seamlessly transporting readers to their favorite science-fiction universe, while also expanding on the people inhabiting it. It can’t be a coincidence that despite the in-canon characters being mostly male ones in this series, many of the new supporting cast are female. One of the bounty hunters turns out to be female in Star Wars: Age Of The Republic – Jango Fett (2019) No. 1 even though she doesn’t overtly represent as one. That is what inclusive writing is all about.

This issue was equally balanced between depicting Jango and Boba – it’s a father-son story, without any sentimentality. Somehow, Houser still manages to put a smile on the reader’s face whenever the Fetts interact with each other. They may be bounty hunters stomping around the galaxy breaking up romances for a handful of credits, but that doesn’t make them any less entertaining to read.
Thankfully, none of the mystery surrounding Jango is dissipated by the plot of this comic book. Instead, we are given snatches of flashbacks to events that Jango had mentioned in his sole on-screen appearance. That is definitely the best way to interpret a Jango story for the series – it keeps the aura of the unknown around him, while adding heft to his characterization.
The long wait for the next Star Wars film doesn’t feel half as long thanks to all these comics available to fans. Especially not when the stories are as thrilling as Star Wars: Age Of The Republic – Jango Fett (2019) No. 1.
