7. Alex and Maggie (Supergirl)

The introduction of NCPD Officer Maggie Sawyer during Supergirl‘s second season brought with it significant changes for mainstay Alex Danvers. The D.E.O. agent had previously shared a romantic attraction to Season 1 anti-hero Maxwell Lord and thus, was completely unprepared for what came next. We, however, were not unprepared.

From their very first interaction, the chemistry between these two was clear, and the events that followed saw Alex question everything that she thought she knew about herself as she embarked on a journey of self-discovery and, eventually, acceptance. This didn’t just give her the courage to come out to her family, it pushed her to go and get the girl – which she did, successfully.

Groundbreaking doesn’t even come close to summing up the impact that Alex and Maggie’s relationship had on viewers. As the Arrowverse’s first ever lesbian couple, Sanvers highlighted the importance of representation and paved the way for other shows (and superhero shows) to follow in their footsteps. They were an empowering and strong team that also wasn’t afraid of tenderness and compassion – just like any other badass couple. And the chemistry between Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima was, like the relationship itself, just exquisite.

Another thing that sets Sanvers apart from most of the other couples on this list is that they didn’t suffer a terrible break-up from which there was no way back, nor were they torn apart by death. Instead, they just wanted different things out of life and, despite their best attempts to make it work, Maggie just couldn’t see herself as a mother while Alex wanted children. As a result, they parted as lovers with absolutely no hard feelings. It was another mature, yet heartbreaking, development from this revolutionary couple.

In a single year, Sanvers moved mountains.
