5. Kara and Mon-El (Supergirl)

When Mon-El arrived on Earth, he wasn’t exactly the most likable of characters. A former prince of destroyed planet Daxam, he wasn’t used to doing things for himself and failed to take anything of importance seriously. Although this started off quite endearing, it didn’t take long for his behavior to become infuriating. There was, however, one thing that he began to take seriously: his feelings for Kara.

Inspired by Supergirl’s complete lack of selfishness, Mon-El took it upon himself to use his powers for good. Though he failed multiple times, he eventually made significant progress (in all departments) – a change that made Kara see him in a completely different light. And soon, they both took the next step and began a romantic relationship, allowing Mon-El to prove himself and show us al a more loving, tender and all-round better side to him.

While his characterization throughout Season 2 was all over the place at times, it was all a learning curve that ultimately pushed him towards his heroic destiny in Season 3. Thinking he had lost Kara forever after inadvertently travelling to the future, Mon-El joined the Legion of Superheroes in the 31st Century and even found love again. So, when he returned to the present, Kara was in complete awe of the man he had become.

Mon-El and Kara’s relationship may have been problematic at times and far too short-lived, but it accomplished something that most short-lived TV relationships never do: it changed Mon-El for the better. Being with Kara made him a better man and it was ultimately responsible for his transition into the hero that he became. Not a bad legacy for SuperValor to leave behind.
