9. Nate and Amaya (DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow)

When historian-turned-Legend Nate Heywood used his newly-gained metallic abilities to knock out the JSA’s Vixen, Amaya Jiwe, in the second season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, few could have predicted the future that awaited the pair – least of all, them.

Over the course of the season, these two became quite attached and, as Nate taught this woman from 1942 a lot about the modern world, they ended up falling madly in love with each other. However, there was one small issue: they could never be together.

Being the historian that he is, not to mention the fact that he had the past and future at his fingertips on the Waverider, Nate knew how imperative it was not to mess with the timeline. As a result, he had to make sure that, upon the completion of her mission, Amaya would be dropped back off in 1942 so that she could return to Zambesi, raise a family and eventually pave the way for her granddaughter, Mari, to become the next Vixen.

Nonetheless, the pair put their reservations aside and pursued their feelings for each other, embarking on a romance that provided us with several of Legends‘ greatest moments.

What made Nate and Amaya’s relationship so compelling was that, even though we knew how their story was destined to end, we still clung on, hoping for a different outcome – that illusive loophole in the timeline that everyone is looking for. But alas, they were unable to overcome time itself and, after two seasons together, Amaya returned to Zambesi in order to ensure her family’s survival – while we, like Nate, were heartbroken.
