Wolverine’s hot claws may seem silly, but they add more to the best there is.

Wolverine has been slowly making his return back to Marvel Comics. His return started in Marvel Legacy No. 1 and will soon be completed in Return of Wolverine No. 5. He’ll also be making his return to with his mutant teammates in an upcoming issue of Uncanny X-Men. During his comeback we’ve seen some things that are unlike the Wolverine that died. Among them are his new hot claws. A power that he didn’t have before he died. These powers have gotten slack because they appear weird and silly, but they’re a great addition to the best there is at what he does.

What are his new powers?

If we’re being honest about things, Logan isn’t on the level of a Galactus or Silver Surfer. He may be one of the best and most underappreciated fighters in the Marvel Universe, he isn’t going to be destroying the omega level beings. In Jason Aaron’s run of Thor he’s been bouncing them from the past, present, and the future. In the future, Wolverine gained the power of the Phoenix. While it seemed like this was a future event, in Aaron’s run of The Avengers we see Wolverine in the present with the Phoenix Force. What do these two new powers mean? Logan could be going after more dangerous opponents.

What to expect and why is this a good thing

His adamantium claws can already cut through almost anything. Now, Wolverine’s claws even the odds when he’s fighting guys like the Hulk, Ghost Rider, or Juggernaut. The Phoenix Force puts him in another league he’s never been in. He’s now running with the likes of Thanos, the Celestials (which he challenged in Avengers No. 700), and Ego The Living Planet. Wolverine has gone from one of the deadliest beings on Earth to a galactic threat.

Logan has continuously evolved as a character. It was only a matter of time before writers tried something new with his powers. Change may be weird for a character that’s been around for a long time, but this could work. He can stay and fight the same group of people on Earth, or we could see what he can do when going up against the elite beings of the Universe. And this isn’t the end of Logan’s evolution. Coming this year, Gerry Duggan will be writing a series called Wolverine: Infinity Watch. In the cover art Wolverine’s claws are popping out of the Infinity Gauntlet. With the Infinity Gems having a soul of their own, who knows how they’ll react to Logan wielding their power. Or if they’ll let him.

Next. More is revealed in Return of Wolverine No. 4: Judgment. dark

Just because Logan has these cosmic powers and hot claws don’t mean that he’s going to abandon the X-Men. For all we know this Phoenix powered Logan could be from the future. He’s already stated that he knows what’s going to happen. It’s possible he knows because he’s been there. Logan would never abandon the X-Men in their time of need and they need him now more than ever. It will be interesting to see what happens with Wolverine once he and Cyclops form their own X-Men. Regardless, Wolverine’s new powers are from a curse. Also, there’s no guarantee they’ll last forever. Let’s just enjoy this hot new Wolverine while we can. Pun intended.
