Captain Marvel box office projections trending up

Captain Marvel will look to take greater flight at the box office, topping the original projection for opening weekend by 20 percent.

Captain Marvel was recently projected at $100 million for its opening weekend in March. If so, that would top the likes of Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy. Could that number increase, though?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new projection is $120 million, an increase of $20 million. If it comes to fruition, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok‘s numbers would be left in the dust.

Of course, these are just predictions based on available information. That does not mean Captain Marvel will make a guaranteed $120 million but, with a lackluster box office for the first seven weeks of 2019 that had no superstar blockbuster film, maybe this is what’s needs to boost the movie theaters.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has created incredible hype over the past few years, with the conclusion of Phase 3 and success across almost every move its unleashed. From Homecoming to Ragnarok and 2018’s Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, these films ruled the box office and covered up any general problems for box office results.

Two of the MCU’s films in 2019 are groundbreaking, as well, for money-making. Captain Marvel is this franchise’s first solo female movie. Avengers: Endgame will follow, continuing the events of Infinity War and potentially ending the runs of many fan-favorite superheroes. July’s Spider-Man: Far From Home probably has a good future ahead, too.

Each has the pull for moviegoers to frequent their local theater. It starts with Captain Marvel, which can exceed those original projections, soar and make up for the other films’ struggles in 2019. Maybe this is what potential viewers have waited for. If so, it could be the moment that sets off revenue for the rest of the year.
