12. The Gargoyle King Appears In The Cooper Household

Episode: “Chapter Forty-One: Manhunter” (Season 3, Episode 6)

The Gargoyle King is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. Worshipped like a god in the game Gryphons and Gargoyles, the creature’s intimidating presence was felt throughout the first half of Season 3 as it claimed soul after soul due to each player’s unwavering commitment to the game. However, it also seemed to seek out those who attempted to derail its plans.

Much like she always does, Betty Cooper took it upon herself to investigate the creature, and when she attempted to get some answers from her mother Alice about her past with Gryphons and Gargoyles, it decided to take action.

On an incredibly stormy night in Riverdale, the power in the Cooper household was randomly cut. As Betty and Alice stuck close, their suspicions arose when they heard a knocking at the front door, only to discover that there wasn’t actually anyone outside. Whenever they turned back into the house, The Gargoyle King itself rose from behind the sofa and outstretched its wooden arms as flashes of red lightning illuminated the room – a sight that struck fear into the hearts of the Coopers (not to mention horrifying all of us who were watching at home).

With the eerie music and the goosebump-inducing sight of The Gargoyle King (who actually looks a lot more menacing indoors) rising from the darkness, this scene certainly supported the theory that the creature wasn’t of this earth and was, in fact, capable of harnessing the supernatural.

More than anything, this was a warning to Betty and Alice and, it’s safe to say that the message was received loud and clear.
