Cloak and Dagger season 2, episodes 1 and 2 review
By Sara Salamat
Cloak and Dagger returned with a action-packed and shocking 2-hour season premiere. Spoilers ahead for episodes one and two.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, and they have finally returned to our screens with a 2-hour special of Cloak and Dagger with the first two episodes of the season: “Restless Energy” and “White Lines.”
The two-hour/two-episode special began with Tandy trying to reconnect with her old routines such as ballet, group therapy sessions, and even cooking with her mom? It’s not the Tandy we knew in season one. But hey, change is good.
While Tandy is trying to heal her life from before, Tyrone is more of a hermit than ever, given that the last time we saw him he was on the run for being framed for Fuch’s murder towards the second half of season one. This results in him watching all his loved ones from afar, because after all, he’s on the run. He’s been practicing his powers that’s for sure, and using them to stop drug dealers and return stolen money. After one of his “missions,” he teleports into the backseat of O’Reilly’s car, startling her. Seeing what he has been doing, she pleads him to lay low, while they figure this case out. Because all evidence is pointing against him.
Going back to Tandy, we see her sitting in a group therapy session with her mother which seems to be about women in abusive relationships. Tandy’s mother explains that she never told Tandy about her father’s abusive ways out of fear that her daughter would also end up in an abusive relationship. Tandy calls her mother “heroic” for this – which seems like milestone the two have reached in the repairing of their mother/daughter relationship.

The moderator of the group session encourages a new girl in the group, Mikayla, to speak – to which she refuses to speak, stating that she was only there because her friend made her go if she wanted a place to crash that night. She shuffles in her seat, dropping her wallet. Eyes on the wallet, Tandy returns it to her after the session and tells Mikayla that if she ever needs to talk to someone her door is open, to which Mikayla declines politely. But Tandy instantly caught up on Mikayla’s weird vibe. We’ll get back to her later.
Back at the abandoned church that night, Tandy and Tyrone have learned to become more comfortable with each other, and have started little movie nights in the abandoned church they call home. It’s here that Tandy encourages Tyrone to go reach out to Evita, and Tyrone reveals he’s been going after drug dealers on his own to try to make the city a better place.
Later, Tandy goes to the address listed on Mikayla’s drivers license that same night and her suspicions were right – she is in an abusive relationship with a guy named Jeremy. Eyeing the house, Tandy lights up a dagger and vandalizes Jeremy’s house as soon as Mikayla leaves, carving “leave her alone” in capital letters on his wall.
Towards the end of the episode, we are introduced to Mayhem, who Marvel fans will initially recognize as Detective O’Reilly’s alter ego in the comics. But the Cloak and Dagger writers seem to be pulling a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde-type situation on us. But it isn’t until the final minutes of the episode that we find this out. We see Tyrone help a tied-up Detective O’Reilly in her apartment. He then teleports them both to Tandy, who is with the throat-slashing Mayhem. That’s when we see there are not one, but two Brigid O’Reillys.
Then it clicks for the audience. Mayhem and O’Reilly are two separate people.
Final Thoughts:
In comparison to the slower pace season one had, season two already looks promising from the first two episodes. Tandy and Tyrone have matured since we saw them last summer and this season appears to be less about their abilities, but more about what they do with them.
Cloak and Dagger airs Thursdays at 8/9c on Freeform.
