The Legends confronted Mona’s inner Wolf in this week’s truth-tastic episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, but did it all live up to the hype? Here’s everything that went down in “The Getaway”.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow made its long-awaited return to The CW last week when the titular heroes found themselves attempting to track down the Kaupe known as Konane. Unfortunately, that didn’t end very well for Konane and, as a result of his death (at the hands of a Time Bureau agent), Mona ended up transforming into a Werewolf-like creature (Werekaupe?) and had her bloody way with her love’s killer – a cliffhanger that had a major role to play in this week’s installment.

On the surface, “The Getaway” was designed to look like just another crazy exploit for the time-traveling misfits, but at its heart, it’s truth-centric plot is a well-crafted device to force the truth out of Mona about her inner werewolf, kick-starting a conversation about her place in the world and bringing the conflicted team together. But that was just the beginning of the craziness that awaited us.

Telling The Truth

The episode primarily revolved around the team’s attempts to track down a surprisingly truthful President Nixon and restore his well, untruthfulness, in order to preserve the timeline. The cause of this madness was an ancient bug that fed off lies, leaving nothing but truth (because, well, Legends). As always, things went awry for the team, as Hank (who stepped in as Interim Director of the Time Bureau in Ava’s absence) decided that the Legends had gone too far with their actions last week and insisted that they be tracked down (more on that later).

The truth bug may sound like a ridiculous concept (seriously, don’t try to explain this show to your friends!), but it was a clever method of getting the characters to open up about their feelings – many of whom really needed to. Without their Waverider, due to Hank, they attempted to make a getaway in an R.V. in 1973 and, of course the bug got loose. It provided us with plenty of hilarious moments as it quickly moved from Ray to John to Mick and back again, but it was only when it made its way into Sara that we got some clarity.

The Waverider captain exploded at Mona, who had clearly been trying to tell her something all day, berating her over her role in last week’s shenanigans and blaming her issues with Ava on the Legends’ newest recruit. This forced Mona to run off and, in doing so, she ran into some Time Bureau agents who were on the hunt for the team. All of this emotion proved to be the motivation that she needed to resurrect the beast within as she transformed again (in a 1973 diner) and took out her frustrations on all of them.

Sara and Constantine’s arrival led to a two-on-one situation as they attempted to calm her, but Sara soon realised that the reason she was so rabid was down to the fact that nobody listened to her. Sara apologised for her actions and, just like that, Mona transformed back to her usual self. As the pair hugged, it was made very clear that she now had a new home on the Waverider.

A Death In The Family

On the other side of the story, Hank was adamant to bring the Legends in due to their outrageous behaviour last week and, in doing so, decided to team up with Nate and Zari – who now works at the Time Bureau (also because Legends). Of course, those two were only working with Hank in an attempt to figure out what he was really up to and, as they did so, took a great deal of pleasure in derailing his mission.

Even without the aid of the truth bug, the pair’s conflicting missions allowed Nate to bond with his father as the latter opened up about his childhood. They connected through their discussion of Nate’s own childhood as well and it ultimately forced the former Legend to question how he and his father ended up in this predicament. However, when Hank eventually did track down the Legends, the truth bug made its way into Nate’s mouth and finally allowed him to reveal all of the pent-up feelings over his father’s actions (in the past and present).

The series of special moments between father and son forced Hank to call off his mission to take down the Legends, clearing them of all charges. But that’s not all he did as, upon seeing the error of his ways, he officially dissolved his partnership with Neron. Unfortunately for him, Neron agreed to the dissolution, marking the occasion by drawing Hank’s own soul from his body and, apparently killing him in the process.

Darhk Days For Neron

Through a few brief appearances here and there, Neron has undoubtedly positioned himself as a force to be reckoned with. His introduction was founded upon his desire to torture John Constantine and, given the new Legend’s history with the dark arts, it made sense that these two would collide. However, as this week’s episode reminded us, Constantine isn’t the only character on the show with a penchant for the dark arts.

Gary’s fruitless attempts to hack Hank’s computer resulted in him turning to Time Bureau prisoner Nora Darhk for help. The former Big Bad and daughter of Damien Darhk successfully aided him in his task, but the pair were caught off-guard by Neron’s unexpected arrival. Though they managed to hide, Nora found herself getting a very bad “vibe” off him. That same bad “vibe” returned later when Neron was in the process of killing Hank.

Unable to take the burning sensation, she knew something was wrong and managed to summon all of her strength to break free from her cell. Upon doing so, she entered Hank’s office only to discover that she was too late to save him. To make matters worse, Nate immediately assumed that she was responsible for it and, out of options, she reawakened her magic to escape.

Watch out Neron, Nora Darhk is back.

Legendary Leftovers

  • Nora Darhk’s sudden entry into the fray promises to take things in an interesting direction. While we knew that the character’s redemption arc would lead to an expanded role this season, her important scenes almost always took place at the Time Bureau. But, as we saw when she destroyed her own cell, her magic is stronger than ever. Could she be the key to taking down Neron?
  • The scenes between Nate and Hank were once again really nice. Watching their relationship has been a real highlight this season, and I hope that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Mr. Heywood.
  • The scene between Mona and Sara turned out to be surprisingly emotional. It was a fitting denouement for the episode and certainly got me in the feels. I’m not crying, you are!
  • Between wanting to grow his hair out and save Robert Redford’s career, Mick continues to be the show’s surprisingly subtle MVP.
  • “Siri… Alexa… Gideon!” Same Hank, same.
