Shazam opening weekend strikes with over $53 million
Shazam recently hit theaters Friday, and the box office haul was notable.
On April 5, DC Films brought Shazam! into the foray of the DCEU. Already the film is a success! This Captain Marvel went above the opening weekend box office estimate.
David F. Sandberg’s début into super heroics brought in $20.3 million Friday. On Saturday the film saw only a mere 4% drop, bringing in an extra $19.5 million. Finally, the film wrapped up the weekend on Sunday with a 30 percent daily drop with $13.6 million. In total, Shazam‘s opening weekend totaled over $53.5 million. Predictions originally were hovering just at $50 million or a few points below. Of course it took the No. 1 spot at the box office. Pet Sematary came in the No. 2 spot, making a little less than half of Shazam‘s opening weekend. In total, the film has already made over $56 million domestically.
However, this is strangely the smallest box office opening weekend for a DCEU title. Some of this could be due to bad history with critics and mainstream audiences. Nonetheless, the praise has been phenomenal. This film opened along Pet Sematary and Spring Break did just end recently. Do families and young people need to blow any more money at the moment?
On the international stage Shazam! is also off to a get start. In this opening weekend Shazam! brings in over $102 million from the international box office. This beats the international opening weekend of Aquaman and Man of Steel. Keep in mind the film is not available in all other countries, especially Japan. Once we learn more about how it did in certain international markets well let you know.
With over 4,000 theaters who knows how it will do the next weekend. However, every other film will be opening in less than 4,000 theaters next weekend. There is the new Hellboy coming in, but with an R-rating. The other films like Little or Missing Link hardly have any traction for us to fear for Shazam falling to the No. 2 spot. Ranking aside, the film has a $85 million budget, therefore this movie appears fine at turning a profit for Warner Bros.
