New Swamp Thing trailer arrives as show’s production is halted

The first trailer for DC Universe’s Swamp Thing is here, but it’s accompanied by some bad news.
DC Universe’s Swamp Thing has been in production for a while now, but aside from a brief tease from producer Len Wiseman, nothing has been revealed. Now, the streaming service has released the first, official look at the titular character. Unfortunately, there’s some additional news that’s sure to disappoint fans.
DC Universe released a short trailer for Swamp Thing, which culminated in the reveal of the eponymous superhero. While the shot is dark, it’s clear enough to see the detailed, live-action recreation of the classic DC Comics character:
More from DC Universe
- James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy casts more major DC characters
- New Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer pushes Arthur to his limits
- 7 actors who could replace Ezra Miller as The Flash in the DC Universe
- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will have a battle pass (and that’s a bad sign)
- Harley Quinn renewed for a fifth season on Max (and it’s well-deserved)
While the trailer looks promising, it comes on the heels of some surprising news. A news outlet in North Carolina, which is where the show is filmed, reports (via The Playlist) that production on Swamp Thing was recently halted after finishing only 10 of the 13 ordered episodes. The trade says the reason for this delay is that Warner Bros. is currently weighing the future of the DC Universe streaming service, specifically how it fits into WarnerMedia’s OTT service plans.
With this, the show’s budget is also being cut, as executives at Warner Bros. try reach on the service. The season finale will also be rewritten to compensate for the reduced episode-count.
Viewership numbers for the service were previously reported to be low, as it has tried to bring in more subscribers since its launch last fall. Surprisingly, this doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment. Still, one can only wonder how the company plans to further promote and improve upon the streaming platform moving forward.
It’s also disappointing that Swamp Thing is feeling the direct effects of the decision, as it’s become a highly anticipated project among hardcore comic book fans. It remains to be seen what the future holds for DC Universe. But as of right now, Swamp Thing is still slated to debut on May 31.
