The Gifted canceled after two seasons, basically ending X-Men TV shows
Fox’s The Gifted became the latest Marvel-produced television show to receive the ax.
The Gifted arrived as an X-Men spin-off in 2017 with ties to classic Marvel characters like Magneto. It stretched the comics, as heroes and villains who were not portrayed in 20th Century Fox’s cinematic universe received air time.
However, The Gifted will cease after just two seasons, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It suffered at the hands of Disney and Fox’s eleven-figure merger earlier this year. Ratings were down over 40 percent from season 1.
Fox Entertainment had the show in its hands after 20th Century Fox Television’s inclusion in the blockbuster deal, but the situation mirrored Netflix’s decision to rid themselves of Marvel-related content.
Marvel Television content is basically exclusive to Disney, as THR noted. ABC — Disney-owned — has Agents of SHIELD, and a bevy of shows connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe will arrive on its streaming service, Disney Plus, down the road.
Netflix canceled Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher ahead of its deal to produce Marvel shows expiring and with Disney Plus ahead in November 2019. Given the House of Mouse’s stranglehold on these characters, it seems Fox Entertainment ditched quickly, before moving forward with a third season of The Gifted or another project.
Note that Legion, another Marvel show but on FX, will end after its third season, although that was always the plan for creator Noah Hawley’s series.
X-Men television spin-offs are ending as soon as they arrived, which is unfortunate for fans of this part of the Marvel Universe. However, if Marvel Studios has plans for this popular group of characters in the MCU, this might not be the last time these headline names appear. That goes for Fox’s X-Men Cinematic Universe, which will release X-Men: Dark Phoenix this summer and likely end that long-standing series of films.
The Gifted may be over, but the X-Men characters will live in some form of comic book media. The news will disappoint some, but plenty of Marvel-produced content is ahead moving forward.
