Dark Phoenix final trailer signals end of days for the X-Men

With just over a month until Dark Phoenix hits theaters, 20th Century Fox released one last trailer for the latest edition to the X-Men franchise.

As Game of Thrones fans know by now, the show’s eighth and final season premiered for the first time last Sunday. There, Sophie Turner reprised her role as Sansa Stark. 20th Century Fox decided to take the smart approach and use the newfound Game of Thrones hype to promote one last trailer for their own Sophie Turner-led picture, Dark Phoenix. The trailer can be viewed below.

Much of the trailer shows us some of the same scenes we have seen previously, but there are a few new additions worth talking about. The trailer starts off with something of a comedic clip featuring Quicksilver, suggesting that the film may not be entirely filled with doom and gloom compared to previous trailers.

Speaking of doom and gloom, there is a finality to the tone of this new trailer. As if no matter who lives and who dies – Mystique’s death is still being teased – that this franchise will be ending as soon as the credits roll. That should be expected considering that when those credits do commence, all X-Men rights will go back to Marvel, who is expected to rebrand the entire franchise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Before we get to that point, however, there are still a few things worth looking forward to for the finale of the Fox version of the franchise. As depicted in its trailer, Jessica Chastain is being presented as the devil on Jean Grey’s back – aka The Phoenix – which could present an interesting dynamic. Jean herself is presented as an ally who becomes Public Enemy No. 1 in an instant. Most importantly, while other trailers suggested Jean struggles to contain the beast within, this new one sees her recognize “it feels good” when she loses control.
