Avengers: Endgame is the MCU’s swan-song for many fan-favorite characters. We take a look at some of the most unexpected moments of the film. Major spoilers lie ahead.
The culmination of 11 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe films has arrived. Avengers: Endgame, perhaps the most anticipated film in any franchise, starts off with a bang that sets the theme for the rest of the film – expect the unexpected.
It is hard to imagine any genre film topping the shocking denouement of Avengers: Infinity War, and the Russo Brothers don’t try to repeat the formula in their follow-up. Instead, there are several smaller moments that will give viewers pause. As we noted in our review, the finale is a nostalgic nod to the 21 Marvel Cinematic Universe films that have come before, as well as the plethora of characters the franchise has brought to life on screen.

Intertextuality has never been more obvious than in Avengers: Endgame, which leans heavily on MCU nostalgia and symmetry. Not all the throwbacks are as successful as others, however, as we will see in this list. The Russo Brothers had an impossible task at hand bringing all these disparate characters together in the final two MCU films. While Infinity War spread its focus to as many characters as possible, in Endgame, the screen time is heavily inclined towards the original Avengers members, as well as Scott Lang/ Ant-Man. Despite its three-hour runtime, some characters got more characterization (though not always better), while others ended up on the chopping block, which was surprising, to say the least.
