Captain America’s future teased by the events of Avengers: Endgame

The Russo Brothers teased the future of Captain America movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame. Major spoilers are ahead from Endgame.

Steve Rogers’ journey ended with the finish to Avengers: Endgame. While his character did not perish, it traveled back in time to not only return the Infinity Stones to their original spots, but live the life taken from him in Captain America: The First Avenger.

In the present, when Steve had a gift in hand for Sam Wilson, who watched with Bucky Barnes as they sent their friend into the past. It was the original Captain America shield, and Steve said it is a fit for Sam.

Of course, that teased a continued future for the Star-Spangled Avenger in the MCU. Potentially as soon as the Disney Plus show with Wilson and Barnes. Whether that or something else, there is seemingly more to the Captain America story, as director Joe Russo told Entertainment Weekly:

"“If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality,” Joe explained. “The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away?”“Interesting question, right?” Joe said. “Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking.”"

That opens a can of speculation that may span years.

The Russos are aware of what they did with Captain America returning to the past, so they could have something up their sleeves. Given the fanfare around Chris Evans’ exit as this character, it seems unlikely for him to reprise this role and explore the past. So maybe this comment from Russo is a hypothetical for Marvel Studios to create into a reality.

Nothing is guaranteed for Cap’s future until Marvel makes an official announcement. No reports have supported that notion yet, with Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, another Black Panther film and a second Doctor Strange movie up their sleeves.

So, for now, it sticks Captain America on Disney Plus, which only increases that show’s profile. It can become an origin story for Sam’s use of the shield, if anything, with him growing into the role by the series’ end. Maybe that’s the plan, but either way, the story does not seem finished.
